Sacred Living: Clearing Your Closet

It’s a new season and the perfect time to clear out your closet. The picture above is of my mom, son and niece during a basketball game that my sister coached. My mom passed away on June 11th of this year and this is the first school year that we don’t have her around to get school stuff organized. It makes me extremely sad, but I’m going to do my best to carry on her traditions of clearing closets.

When my son was in elementary school, the end of summer always meant removing the old and replacing his cabinet with new clothes for the upcoming school year. This usually takes a few hours and is satisfying in the end.

Step 1. Remove all the clothes from the closet that are too small or just haven’t been worn and put in a donate pile. I find trying to sell clothes can be also time-consuming unless it a highly sought after name brand. Check ThredUp for a list.

Step 2. Remove clothes and shoes from the closet that are stained, have rips and tears, and worn out. If you have access to textile recycling, then donate there. Otherwise, put in the trash.

Step 3. If you have a capsule wardrobe. Store all spring and summer clothes and shoes in a bin and replace with fall and winter.

Step 4. Do step 1 and step 2 with every drawer in your room. Drawers usually contain your workout clothes, intimate apparel, and socks. Do the same with all your accessories…handbags, jewelry, hats, etc.

Step 5. Take everything in bags to your favorite place to donate. Do it today. Don’t let it sit for more than 24 hours.

Don’t overthink clearing your closet. Just focus on the goal of having a closet full of clothes that fit and you love. Life is too short to wear things that don’t make you feel fabulous.
