Strategies for a Healthy Holiday Season

For many of us, the holidays can cause havoc on our mood and overall well-being. Here are a few tips that will get you through the season a little more organized, a little less stressed and a lot happier.

Plan Ahead. Put important dates on your calendar right now…work deadlines, upcoming projects, vacation dates for yourself and other family members, holiday parties, etc. Include anything that requires a place to be or do. It’s easier to say “no” to another event if you’ve already made plans. This lessens the chance of over booking and having child care coverage.

Stock Up. Buy a few extras when you’re at the grocery store, mall or online shopping.  Buying a little extra now will save you the stress of buying last minute items like a bottle of wine, hostess gift, cans for the food drive. Making last minute stops can add stress when you’re already in a rush. You’ll save time and money.

Write it Down. Keep a piece of paper and pen handy. Don’t leave things to memory. I’ve often committed to things such as bringing cookies to an event and complete forgetting I said so. Everyone is in a hurry and trying to cross things off of their “to do” lists. Writing something down will reinforce your commitment to memory.

Say “No” and don’t feel guilty about it. Over committing can be a real problem during the holidays. It’s best to spend your time doing and spending time with what you value the most and say “no” to everything else guilt free. I would love to volunteer my time to the less fortunate and local soup kitchen but at this moment, I’m not willing to take time away from spending time with my son when he’s home from school. Setting your priorities and boundaries are super important this time of year. Reminder…create and write down a reasonable budget on holiday spending and stick to it. When you’re over your budget, saying “no” is much easier to do.
