Why Should I Get Organized?

“Why should I get organized?” you ask.

Because tidying your home and getting organized is a spiritual experience and you’ll grow strong roots so you can serve humanity and live your life’s purpose. Seriously, your soul will thank you.

“But I already like who I am and I’m OK with my space.” you say.

I hear that sentiment all the time, until a client goes through the process of tidying, organizing and learning to get spiritual with their stuff.

I highly recommend you reading The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. After reading and applying her suggestions, you too will begin looking at your belongings from a different perspective.

Marie Kondo suggests you hold each item and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?”

If you look around your space right now, how many items have you actually touched in the past year? I had a ton of clothes, handbags, bed sheets and towels, books, kitchen appliances, jewelry, and a bunch of other items that have been in boxes for years that have been untouched, unseen, and never missed.

Here’s a few other reasons to get your home organized.

  1. Save Time. You will literally gain hours of time because you won’t have to look for anything. You know what you own and where you put it. You will also have less to stuff to clean, fix, take to the dry cleaners, put away or store, etc.
  2. Save Money. When you have less stuff, you have less things to fix, replace, or store. You’re also buying enough and replacing as you go, so nothing is wasted or expires. I spent a lot of money and time on things that were for “just in case.” After you purchase something brand new, it’s value decreases by more than 50 percent. Not a good investment.
  3. You Have Enough Space. When I was a leasing agent in college, I often heard prospective renters say that “this place isn’t big enough for all my stuff.” People were willing to live in a less desirable location so they could store their stuff. I was always amused by how attached people were to their things. I’m subconsciously a hoarder, but once I understood why I purchased and kept things, I stopped buying subconsciously. One of the reasons is that I never liked to run out of things and often saved things for a rainy day. Since I started organizing and decluttering my life, I have never run out of anything, including space.
  4. Freedom. The more stuff you have the less freedom you have to do things that create memories. I can’t tell you enough how many times I’ve heard “I can’t go, I have to clean my house, do laundry or I have a ton of stuff to do at home.” When you are organized, cleaning is a breeze, you have less laundry to do, and you actually have the freedom to do things that are fun and memorable. You have the freedom to do as you want because you have more time and money.
  5. You’re Surrounded with Love. When you make an effort to surround yourself with only things you love, your perspective and mindset changes. You wake up with beauty and joy, rather than anger and painful memories. I have a friend who woke up every morning to a beautiful picture of Italy, but every time she looked at the picture it reminded her of the honeymoon she shared with her now ex-husband. Though the picture was beautiful, it brought about sadness and pain. Remove these items as soon as possible. Live only with the things you love and bring joy.

Is getting organized one of your New Year’s resolutions? If not, share your number one priority.
